Cheesy Grilled Asparagus In Foil

This recipe for Cheesy Grilled Asparagus shows you exactly how to grill asparagus in a foil packet. Trimmed asparagus topped with cheeses and then grilled in foil comes out perfectly tender. This healthy side dish is great for ketogenic and low carb lifestyles.

In our house, I am the grilling queen. I grill year round and I love experimenting with different cuts of meat and even using the grill to make veggies and various side dishes.

Can you grill asparagus?

Yep! There are two ways to do it. One way is to season it with some oil and spices then throw the spears straight onto the grill for a few minutes on each side.

The other way is by using a foil packet to lock in the heat so the asparagus steams and becomes tender. It also allows you to add cheese which makes everything better.

📝 Ingredients You’ll Need/

  • Asparagus Spears: When I buy asparagus, I usually end up buying 1 1/2 pounds for 4 servings. Whenever I buy one pound, it cuts down to 3 servings by the time the woody stems are trimmed off.
  • The Cheeses: Creamy mozzarella cheese and crisp and salty Parmesan are the perfect cheese combination for grilled asparagus.
  • Salt, Pepper and Garlic Powder: A basic seasoning used to season the asparagus before the cheese is on it.
  • Avocado Oil: The asparagus gets coated in a thin layer of oil to keep the asparagus moist and so that the dry seasonings stick to it.

📖 How to Make Cheesy Grilled Asparagus in Foil

To make a foil packet:

To make a foil packet for the grill, make sure you are using heavy duty aluminum foil. If you don’t have any, use two layers of regular strength foil.

1️⃣ Roll out a layer of aluminum foil, enough to fit your asparagus spears in a single layer horizontally. Add asparagus and toppings in a single layer.

3️⃣ On top, add another even layer of foil then fold in both sides together creating an airtight packet. This is important as it will keep the hot air in the packet making sure the asparagus cooks evenly. If air escapes it could take too long to cook possibly burning the asparagus.

To grill asparagus in foil packet:

1️⃣ Preheat Your Grill: Turn on your grill and set it to a medium high heat. If you have a thermometer on your grill, keep the temperature between 350-300 degrees F.

2️⃣ Prepare Your Asparagus: Chop off the woody stems of your asparagus spears, then toss them in oil, salt and pepper.

3️⃣ Prepare Your Foil Packet: Make a foil packet using the instructions above and place the seasoned asparagus spears all facing the same direction horizontally.

4️⃣ Add Toppings: Add cheeses and any other seasonings evenly on top of asparagus.

5️⃣ Close The Foil Packet: Add the second layer of foil on top of the asparagus and fold in all 4 sides making sure that the packet is airtight so no steam escapes while cooking.

6️⃣ Grill The Asparagus: Place the asparagus foil packet on the grill on the side that is the least under direct heat (usually the front of the grill). Leave the packet on for 12-14 minutes.

7️⃣ Check Asparagus: Once the asparagus is fully cooked through, gently open the foil packet using tongs to make sure hot steam does not burn you.

8️⃣ Serve: Using a spatula, scrape cheesy asparagus off of the foil and right onto a serving dish or dinner plate. Serve while it’s hot.

🔀 Variations

  • Drizzle balsamic on the asparagus
  • Add fresh garlic and sun-dried tomatoes
  • Add feta and oregano
  • Add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and some fresh herbs
  • Use shredded cheddar and bacon
