As always, artichokes can be prepared using many different methods, including grilling, steaming and roasting. However, boiling your artichokes is a quick and simple way to ensure they are cooked perfectly every time.

📖How To Boil Artichokes

1️⃣Prepare artichokes: Begin by washing two artichokes under cold water. Using a brush, scrub away any dirt and debris that may be clinging to the vegetables. Next, remove any tough outer leaves and cut away all but about one inch of the stem at the bottom of the artichoke. If desired, you can also trim the sharp tips of the leaves to make your artichokes more aesthetically pleasing.

2️⃣Boil water: Fill a large pot with enough water to cover the artichokes. Then add 1-2 tablespoons of salt and 1-2 tablespoons of lemon juice to your water. Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat.

3️⃣Add artichokes: Once the water is boiling, add whole globe artichokes to your pot and reduce to medium-high heat. Cover the pot and allow the artichokes to simmer for 25-35 minutes. You will know your artichokes are ready when a knife can be easily inserted into the thickest part of the artichoke.

4️⃣Cool and remove from water: Once your veggies are cooked, remove the pot from the heat and allow them to cool in the water before draining and serving. Enjoy!

👩‍🍳Cooking Tips

  • Don’t overcook artichokes or they may become waterlogged and mushy.
  • Add enough water to you pot that artichokes are fully submerged but not so much that water will splash out of the pot when adding the vegetables to the water or when boiling.
  • Always start with cold water as hot water can contain minerals from your hot water heater. Cold water also contains more oxygen and will actually boil faster than starting with warm water!
  • Seasoning ideas: You could try seasoning water with bay leaves, fresh herbs or use vegetable or chicken stock to add more flavor to your artichokes. Or perhaps, add garlic cloves to the water to enhance the flavor of this dish.
