Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • optional: 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes or until the mixture is smooth and bubbly while whisking.
  • Slowly whisk in milk, whisking until the mixture is smooth. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then cook for 2-3 minutes or until it has thickened.
  • Remove the sauce from the heat and stir in Gruyere cheese until it is melted and fully incorporated.
  • Season the sauce with salt, pepper, and nutmeg to taste. Serve immediately or store in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. To reheat, cook over low heat in a small saucepan until warmed through.

❄️Storage Instructions

Storage: Keep leftover Gruyère sauce in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Do not leave at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
Freezing: Freeze Gruyère sauce in a well-sealed container for up to 1 month. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Reheating: Warm the sauce gently over low heat, stirring frequently to prevent separation. Add a splash of milk or cream if the sauce is too thick.
