This recipe shows how to make Dalgona coffee or whipped coffee using instant coffee, water and keto sweetener or sugar. Although this way of making a fancy cold coffee latte originated in the nineteenth century in places like Greece and Korea and many other places internationally, it was made viral on Tiktok and Instagram making a caffeinated resurgence.
Listen, I’m not one to jump on food trends so quickly. In fact, to this day not a single bag of cauliflower gnocchi has touched my hands.
However, the year is 2020 and the world is going through a hell of a season fighting an enemy that shall remain nameless. Point is, we’re all at home and one of the only joys we have is creating things in the kitchen and I am HERE FOR THIS!
Our inspiration to create can come from a variety of different sources like food blogs, pinterest and even other social media channels like Tiktok and Instagram.
So it’s no wonder in a time like this, Dalgona or Whipped coffee has made a resurgence.
What Is Dalgona Coffee?
Although it has many names, this whipped coffee is exactly what it sounds like. Take equal parts instant coffee, sugar and hot water and whip it real good until it becomes a fluffy foam.
This fluffy foam is used to top a cup of iced milk of your choice and stirred in for a fluffy fancy morning treat or afternoon pick me up.
The name Dalgona coffee originates in Korea from a sticky toffee that is placed on a stick and eaten like candy.
In Greece, it’s called a greek frappe and uses the exact same method.
What Type Of Coffee To Use:
This recipe works best using instant coffee. Instant coffee is coffee that has been freeze dried and becomes a cup of coffee without the need to be brewed when mixed with hot water.
Lots of people have used Nescafe Instant Coffee, but any instant coffee will work, even decaf!
I have heard that it is possible to make this recipe without instant coffee and using espresso grind coffee, however I have not tried it but let me know in the comments if you do!
How To Mix Whipped Coffee:
There are 3 ways to make this coffee. These are listed from easiest to hardest.
- Use A Stand Mixer – This creates the most dishes but also is the best way to achieve whipped coffee in a short amount of time using the whisk attachment.
- Use an Immersion Stick Blender – I haven’t done this personally, but I hear it works even though it may take a while and not be as fluffy.
- In a large bowl – using a large bowl and a whisk, you can whip coffee. However, I wouldn’t recommend it because it takes a lot of energy and up to 20 minutes!
What Milk Can I Use?
This is where you can customize your coffee to whatever way of eating you prefer!
- Whole Milk
- Almond Milk
- Condensed Milk
- Hemp Milk
- Oat Milk
- Goats Milk
- Cashew Milk
What kind of sugar Can I Use?
- Granulated Sugar
- Brown Sugar
- Powdered Sugar
- Erythritol – For Keto Whipped Coffee
