Thick Cut Grilled BBQ Pork Chops
This method for Thick Cut Grilled Pork Chops is hands down the best way to grill a pork chop on a gas grill. These simple instructions yield a BBQ pork chop that is tender and juicy on the inside and perfect to serve with any meal!
💭What cut of pork chop is best for grilling?
The best pork chop for grilling is a center cut pork chop. Since they cook up quickly and can dry out easily, make sure they are at least 1 inch thick if not 1.5-2 inches.
You can use bone in center cut pork chops or boneless. Make sure they are from the ribs or loin portion for best results.
🐖Ingredients You’ll Need
Thick Center Cut Pork Chops – You can easily find these at your local grocery store. They come in different sizes and thickness. If you can’t find a center cut pork chop that is 1.5-2 inches thick, ask your butcher if they can cut to size.
Avocado or Olive Oil – This helps to keep the seasonings on the pork chop as well as make it non stick for the grill.
Simple Seasoning – I like to use a simple combination of salt, pepper, and garlic powder, but you can use whatever seasoning you enjoy.
BBQ Sauce – Your favorite BBQ sauce will work in this recipe. I like using sauce that has a bit of sugar in it so it caramelizes on the porkchop while grilling.
📖How To Grill Thick Cut Pork Chops
1️⃣ Prepare and marinate the pork chops. Pat pork chops dry with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture. Then brush them with avocado oil or olive oil lightly. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Set aside.
2️⃣ Prepare the grill. Heat up your gas grill to a temperature between 350-450 degrees F. Somewhere around 400F seems to work best, though the grill may fluctuate. Make sure the heat is stable before adding the pork chops.
3️⃣ Grill the pork chops. Because you greased the pork chops, there is no need to brush the grill grates with oil. Add seasoned pork chops to the hot grill over direct heat, then brush a generous amount of BBQ sauce on one side. Let them cook for 6 minutes, then flip over and brush the other side with BBQ sauce. Cook for another 6 minutes.
4️⃣ Tent & Serve. Remove from the grill and add a piece of foil on top. Let the pork chops rest for 5-8 minutes before slicing and serving. Top with additional BBQ sauce if desired.
⏲Best Time & Temperature For Grilled Pork Chops
The time and temperature below is a guideline on how long it takes to grill a pork chop on a gas grill. The heat of each grill varies, especially since most have hot spots, so make sure you are using a kitchen thermometer to ensure the pork chops are cooked through.
- 1/2 inch pork chops – 5-8 minutes at 350F over direct heat flipping halfway.
- 1 inch pork chops – 10-12 minutes at 400F over direct heat flipping halfway.
- 1.5–2 Inch pork chops – 12-15 minutes at 400-450F over direct heat flipping halfway.
🔥How To Reheat Grilled Pork Chops Without Drying Them Out
Cooked pork chops can easily become really dry when stored in the fridge, but if you use this method, you can reheat pork chops while keeping them as juicy and tender as possible.
- Preheat your oven to 350F
- Remove pork chops from fridge and let them sit at room temperature while the oven is preheating.
- Add the pork chops to a foil packet along with 1/4 cup of water or chicken broth. Close tightly and place the foil packet on a baking sheet.
- Add the foil packet of pork chops to the oven for 12-15 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and carefully open the foil packet for tender reheated porkchops.
🚪Indoor Grill Pork Chops
To make BBQ pork chops indoors, you’ll need a grill pan.
- Heat the grill pan over medium high heat (350-400F)
- Add marinated pork chops and brush BBQ sauce on one side. Let cook for 6-8 minutes.
- Flip, brush the other side with BBQ sauce then cook for another 6-8 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches a minimum of 145F.
- Remove from grill pan and place under foil for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
❔ FAQ
If your pork chops are tough, it means that they were cooked at a heat that’s too high and too quickly. It also means that the pork chop could be to thin. For best results, cook thicker pork chops on the grill and save thinner pork chops for sautéing or pan frying.
Depending on the cut of the pork chop, some cuts of meat may be pink on the inside. This is true for most fattier cuts of pork. Leaner cuts tend to be a bit more white on the inside. Either way, pink pork chops are not an issue as long as they are cooked through.
While it’s best to use a thermometer when cooking pork, you can also tell if it’s finished cooking by gently poking at the cooked meat. You want the pork chop to give into pressure, but only slightly. If it’s too soft, it may not be cooked through. The process is similar to finding a ripe peach or banana.
