Lately, I’ve been getting a lot of questions about air fryers. I definitely fell in love with this useful kitchen appliance and wouldn’t trade it for the world.

I’ve even upgraded to the Ninja Foodi which is an air fryer and pressure cooker all in one! Check out my review of it HERE.

One thing I really love about the pressure cooker and air fryer is that I use it to make the most SIMPLE foods. It’s become a glorified rice, egg and crispy potato maker!

And I mean it when I say CRISPY! The continuous flow of hot air around the diced potatoes yields perfectly cooked taters every time aka fork-tender and crispy. I’d go as far as to say making crispy potatoes in the air fryer is the best method out there!

💗 Why You’ll Love Crispy Air Fryer Potatoes

Meal prep. I make a batch of crispy air fryer potatoes at least once a week and use them for breakfast and as a healthy potato side dish for meals.

Quick and clean. This recipe comes together super fast and the air fryer catches the grease so less cleaning up for you.

Healthy! It comes in handy if you’re following a gluten-free, paleo, Whole30 or vegan diet.

Crispy potatoes go great with any meal of the day! They can be served as breakfast potatoes or as a dinner side.

🥔 What You’ll Need

  • Golden Potatoes – have a high starch content, so they hold up their shape when roasting (or in this case air frying). You can use red potatoes, fingerlings, baby potatoes, etc.
  • Avocado Oil – coats the potatoes, making them crisp when cooked.
  • Garlic Powder – adds flavor.
  • Paprika – adds flavor and color.
  • Salt & Ground Black Pepper – enhances the flavor. Salt, pepper, garlic powder and paprika are my go to simple seasonings, but you can use any seasonings you like.

📖 How do You Cook Potatoes in an Air Fryer or Ninja Foodi?

1️⃣ Prep potatoes. After washing your potatoes, dice into half inch cubes. In a large bowl, toss them with oil and seasonings.

2️⃣ Preheat air fryer to 400 degrees. Add prepped potatoes to basket. Cook for about 20 minutes, flipping the potatoes or shaking the basket a couple of times (every 7 minutes or so).

3️⃣ Once cooked through and tender, carefully remove hot potatoes from the air fryer. Serve hot for breakfast or as an easy dinner side dish. Enjoy!

👩🏻‍🍳 Chef’s Tips

You can use any potato you like including sweet potato, russet potato, red potato, etc.

Feel free to use any seasonings you like as a swap for salt, pepper, garlic and paprika.

Don’t overcrowd the basket. The potatoes don’t need to be in a single-layer, but do not cook so much at once that there’s no room for the air to move around in.

Add diced onion and bell pepper to the air fryer along with the potatoes.

🍽️ How to Serve Air Fryer Diced Potatoes

This recipe is one of those recipes that can be served as a side dish with almost anything!

Serve alongside scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage for a hearty breakfast.

Or serve steakhouse style with steak, broccoli and a side salad.

🔁 Storing & Freezing

Storing: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Freezing: Once potatoes are cooled, place on baking sheet and freeze solid. Move frozen potatoes to a freezer bag. Store frozen for 4 to 5 months.

Reheating: To reheat air fryer potatoes, place them back in the basket and cook at 325 for about 15 minutes shaking the basket halfway through.

FAQ

How do you FRY potatoes in an air fryer?

Short answer, you don’t. This is a common misconception.  An air uses hot circulating air to cook food. Frying is a cooking method where food is submerged in high temperature cooking oil. The air fryer is cooking food with hot air instead of oil but producing a similar texture. So, your potatoes aren’t deep fried in oil, but they are air fried.

How do I make crispy fries in my air fryer?

To make crispy fries in an air fryer make sure you are using an oil that can withstand high temperatures. I use avocado oil because it is a healthy fat to cook in high heat temperatures. Also, make sure your potatoes are evenly coated with oil but not with too much! A thin layer does the trick.

How long do you air fry potato?

Usually 1 pound of diced potato will take about 20 minutes to cook at 375-400 degrees. It helps if all the pieces of potato are the same size AND that you are flipping a few times through the cooking process.

Can you air fry a sweet potato?

Yes!  You can absolutely cook a sweet potato in your air fryer.  Air fryer sweet potatoes are cooked exactly the same way as in the recipe below if you swap your potatoes.

Should I soak the potatoes in water before air frying?

It won’t hurt. Soaking the potatoes first solidifies the starches – resulting in super crispy taters. If you have the time, I say go for it.

Should I preheat my air fryer?

Sometimes you should. Sometimes you shouldn’t. For crispy potatoes, you should. That instant blast of heat crisps the outside of the potatoes while keeping the centers fluffy.
