🛒Is Store-Bought Buffalo Chicken Dip Keto?
I created this recipe when I was following a low-carb diet and saw that store-bought versions were not keto-friendly.
Buffalo chicken dip purchased in stores like Aldi or Publix may not be keto-friendly as extra sugar may be added making the dip contain more carbohydrates. Always check your labels to see what will fit into your lifestyle!
The best part of this recipe is it can be used in 3 ways, to keep your meal time versatile in terms of ways you serve it up. So you will have a keto-friendly recipe, that you can eat in many different ways, to keep you interested in meal times, instead of getting bored eating the same thing over and over.
🍗 How To Make Keto Buffalo Chicken Dip
Instant Pot Keto Buffalo Chicken Dip:
- Add chicken breast to the bottom of the instant pot and pour ½ cup water over the top. Cook on high pressure for 12 minutes and do a quick release once it’s done cooking. You can also use frozen chicken breast for this recipe.
- Remove chicken breast and shred with 2 forks or a stand mixer using the paddle attachment.
- Discard the excess liquid in the instant pot and add the chicken breast back in. Turn the instant pot to saute on LOW. Add in butter or ghee, softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, ranch seasoning, buffalo sauce, garlic, paprika, salt and pepper.
- Stir everything together until everything is mixed together and the shredded cheddar is fully melted.
Crock Pot Keto Buffalo Chicken Dip:
- Add chicken breast to the bottom of the crock pot or slow cooker and pour ½ cup water over the top. Cook chicken on HIGH for 3-4 hours or LOW for 6-8 hours or until chicken is cooked through all the way.
- Remove chicken breast and shred with 2 forks or a stand mixer using the paddle attachment.
- Discard the excess liquid in the crock pot and add the shredded chicken breast back in. Turn crock pot to saute LOW and add in butter or ghee, softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, ranch seasoning, buffalo sauce, garlic, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Stir everything together until everything is mixed and the shredded cheddar is fully melted. If serving right away, keep the crock pot warm and serve right out of it!
Oven Baked Keto Buffalo Chicken Dip:
- To a large sauce pot, add in chicken breast and cover with water until it is 2 inches above the chicken. Turn to high heat and bring to a boil. Once the water is boiling, bring the heat down to low and cover the pot. Chicken should be fully cooked in about 15-20 minutes.
- Remove chicken breast and shred with 2 forks or a stand mixer using the paddle attachment.
- Discard the excess liquid in a sauce pot and add the shredded chicken breast back in. Turn heat to low and add in butter or ghee, softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, ranch seasoning, buffalo sauce, garlic, paprika, salt and pepper.
- Stir everything together until everything is mixed and the shredded cheddar is fully melted.

- If you can’t find pre-made buffalo sauce, simply make your own by using Frank’s Red Hot sauce and mix with butter or ghee as instructed on the back of the bottle.
- Broil the top. An optional step for this recipe is to add the cooked buffalo chicken dip to a casserole dish and broil for a few minutes to get a brown crispy top!
- If you are shredding your chicken, you can use two forks and pull the chicken apart easily. Or purchase meat claws, for a quick shred of the meat.
- Opt to use a full-fat cream cheese, as it is going to help enhance the flavor but also allows for that ultra-creamy texture.
- Make sure you stir the mixture often when you are doing the stovetop method to ensure it doesn’t burn on the bottom of the pan.
🥓Variations and Substitutions
Here are a few ways to change up this keto-friendly buffalo dip.
- Whole30 Buffalo Chicken Dip: To make this recipe Whole30 compliant, swap out the cream cheese for a cream cheese made with almond milk (like KiteHill brand) and omit the shredded cheddar cheese. You would also need to make sure you use the homemade ranch seasoning instead of a ranch seasoning packet.
- With Cream Cheese: When you are using cream cheese for this recipe, I highly recommend full fat. Now you can opt for a lower-fat cream cheese but do know it will lighten up the dip a good amount.
- With Cottage Cheese: If you want to swap out the cream cheese with cottage cheese go for it. You can use a full-fat or low-fat cottage cheese. Do 3/4 cup cottage cheese and then I recommend adding 1/2 cup of Greek plain yogurt or sour cream to help balance out the texture and allow it to be ultra creamy. I do recommend small-curd cottage cheese for the best texture.
- With Bleu Cheese: If you want to add bleu cheese in addition or to replace the cheddar cheese go right ahead. You will mix 3/4 of the cheese in the dip, and then I like to use the rest to sprinkle on top of the dip right before serving, to showcase the bleu cheese.
- With Spinach: Want a buffalo chicken dip with spinach dip as well? Stir in 1/2 cup of chopped spinach and some diced-up artichoke hearts. This will create a two-flavored dip in one.
- With Pizza: Reach for a keto pizza sauce and add in the sauce along with the hot sauce, to create a spicy pizza buffalo dip. You can add in some diced pepperoni for added meaty flavor. I also like to use some mozzarella cheese for added flavoring.
- With Bacon: Cook up and crumble bacon and then mix in the dip when you add the chicken. It makes it a chicken bacon buffalo dip, which adds more protein to the dip.
❄️Storage & Freezing Instructions
How to store: This dip will last up to one week if it is stored in an air-tight container in the fridge. It can be re-heated on the stove-top over medium-low heat until warmed through or it can be warmed up in the microwave.
How to freeze: It is not recommended that this dip be frozen as freezing it and defrosting it will change the texture!
