Can You Eat Unsweetened Applesauce On Whole30?

Yes! When you’re doing a Whole30 reset you can use applesauce in homemade condiments like homemade BBQ sauce and homemade ketchup. Homemade unsweetened applesauce is refined sugar free, budget friendly and can be made 3 different ways easily. You’ll love having this around as a household staple during your Whole30 reset.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Apples – Use your favorite kind of apples in this recipe. To reduce the natural sugar content even more, go with a green granny smith apple or even a golden yellow apple.
  • Water – This helps thin out the apple puree and gives it room to cook without burning the apples.

How To Make Whole30 Applesauce

Instant Pot Unsweetened Applesauce

  • Peel, core and quarter each apple.
  • Add apples to your pressure cooker along with ⅓ cup water.
  • Cook on manual high pressure for 5 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and blend or mash until desired consistency is reached.

Slow Cooker Unsweetened Applesauce

  • Peel, core and quarter each apple.
  • Add apples to your crockpot or slow cooker along with ⅓ cup water.
  • Cook on high for 3-4 hours being sure to check it halfway and stir.
  • Remove from heat and blend or mash until desired consistency is reached.

Stovetop Unsweetened Applesauce

  • Peel, core and quarter each apple.
  • Add apples to a medium or large sauce pot along with ⅓ cup water.
  • Cook on high for 3-4 hours being sure to check it halfway and stir.
  • Remove from heat and blend or mash until desired consistency is reached.
  • Cover and cook over medium heat until it simmers, then reduce heat to low / medium-low and continue cooking until the apples are tender for about about 15-20 minutes. Stir occasionally to help them further break down.
  • Remove from heat and blend or mash until desired consistency is reached.

Flavor Variations

Apples and water are the only ingredients you’ll need to make this recipe, however feel free to add these flavor variations.

  • Cinnamon – A classic flavor for applesauce that pairs well with the natural taste of apples.
  • Nutmeg – Gives the applesauce a slight warming spice.
  • Fresh or Ground Ginger – This will give the applesauce a natural spicy kick.
  • Lemon or Lime Juice – Adds a hint of acidity and helps balance the flavor of apple.
  • Pumpkin Pie or Gingerbread Spice – Adds a hint of warming holiday flavor.

How To Use Unsweetened Applesauce on Whole30

There are many different ways you can eat unsweetened applesauce on your Whole30 reset.

  • Serve on top of this Sheet Pan Pork Tenderloin.
  • Eat it plain with some chopped dates and pecans on top.
  • Make a Homemade Whole30 BBQ Sauce.
  • Use it to make SWYPO recipes (with caution) such as muffins, pancakes or breakfast bakes.
  • Use it in this Homemade Whole30 Ketchup.
  • Add it to homemade curry sauce to add a natural sweetness and thick texture.
