I made $6000 this month through the skin of my teeth. October 2021 wasn’t really as fruitful as I was expecting and all bloggers were seeing that across the board with the strange trends of 2021.

💭 What Happened In October 2021

On The Personal Front

I’m sorry to say that the health issues never continued to stop in October. At that point I was honestly getting scared. I know immunity is a bit off kilter post-pandemic, but this felt like something else.

Long story short, it turns out that our HOUSE has been making us sick. I’ve been putting off getting a full mold inspection done because of the cost, but finally something had to give. The inspector found toxic levels of mold in our house that has very likely been contributing to all of our recent health issues. We are working on getting things taken care of now, but are very relieved that we found the source.

With all that said, blogging once again was not much of a priority for me. I spent most of my time in the first 3 weeks of the month just doing the bare minimum for clients and whatever I could to keep up with blogging but it felt like I was just keeping my head above water once again.

Unfruitful October

I’m not going to sit here and say that making $6000 on my blog when I didn’t work on it much wasn’t fruitful, but I think I was expecting a lot more as were others.

During the summer months, traffic went up and down with the waves of the algorithm, but it eventually stabilized above what it has been before which was extremely promising.

But then when Q4 rolled around, RPM’s plummeted to near January levels and traffic was going down week over week. Ad companies across the board expected these trends because this is the year people were going back to work and school, but I cant say it didn’t take the wind out of my sails and many other bloggers out there.

Most people made more over the summer months than they did in October. It’s one of the volatile waves of blogging that can get scary, but the only thing that has any staying power is to keep going through it all which is what I plan to do.

The Pinterest Middle Finger

One of the big reasons that a bunch of traffic was down for a lot of bloggers is because Pinterest decided to make a small change to their desktop model. Instead of clicking on a pin and bringing you right to the website, a user has to scroll to the bottom and wait for a hover button to pop up to get to that site.

While that may seem like a small change, it added another step for the user which unfortunately leads to a loss of web traffic. The reason for this is because its yet another attempt to keep users ON the Pinterest platform.

It’s only a matter of time before this happens on mobile and they give less and less opportunity to small creators. Currently, Pinterest still is about 1/3 of my traffic so I expect that to be much less as time goes on. While its still around, I’ll be grateful for it but I don’t expect it to be much of a big part of my future strategy.

Still Growing

Over the spring and summer, blogging felt like a sprint to me. I was knocking out so many new posts and really felt back in the game. Unfortunately, due to sickness and burnout I started doing less and less which is a learning lesson on spacing things out a bit better.

What I can say is that if I DIDN’T do all that work, I’d be in a much worse off place traffic and income wise this month. Here are the numbers compared to October 2020:

  • + 38,000 page views
  • + $9.23 RPM
  • + $2527 Income

Looking back, this is a pretty good jump considering last years unprecedented issues.

🦃 Blog Plans For November 2021

In the blogging world, November would usually mean a mad dash for seasonal food content. Over this year I have learned that this is not a great strategy for my blog so there’s no need to rush to have certain content.

This is a relief because it means I can be a bit more flexible with my time as there is a lot going on for us this month. I will say that I feel the urge to get back to that place where I’m a content creating machine but in a balanced way.

I’m going to post as much as I can while also tending to the ghostwriting business. I will also be reflecting about 2021 and what changes I’d like to make for a successful 2022. Either way I continue to be incredibly grateful for this blog and everything I’ve learned along the way.
