💭What Happened In April 2022

April Traffic & RPM’s

This month I officially had a 40,000 pageview drop. And while the summer months ahead usually bring in less traffic, this was definitely not your average swing. I watched my traffic get lower and lower and dug into the numbers to realize I just got hit negatively with maybe 2 algorithm updates.

It probably doesn’t help that I changed themes and things are still settling out from that, but to say I’m disheartened is an understatement. I’d like to say I’m keeping my cool in the matter, but I do feel like I’m in a bit of a panic.

When something like this happens, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what needs to change. And worse, there’s always a change things may not recover at all. I’ve got some ideas around strategy to help combat this and recover, but it’s still scary as I’ve become a bit too dependent on ad revenue.

Publishing Sprint

For many reasons, I’ve decided to continue to increase my publishing schedule. I feel like it may be one of the only ways to get ahead.

As a food blogger, it’s not always easy to get a solid post out quickly as there are a lot of moving parts like food photography and recipe development. Despite this, I plan on cranking out more posts than I ever have before to see what happens.

Writing Clients

My writing business has also slowed down quite significantly. While I could always look for more clients, I have had gut feeling to put a pause on that so I can give my blog the much needed attention it needs.

This is also scary because I’m not sure if it will pay off in the end, but it’s even more scary to NOT try.

Creating an Audience

As part of paying more attention to the blog, I’ve decided to hop back on social media. My plan right now is to take it slow and just post videos to Tiktok and Youtube. I have this awful habit where I build an audience in random places and then ghost everyone and I don’t want to do that anymore.

With this bit of time off, I think I’ve been able to realize the best way to strike a balance between being all or nothing. I can share valuable information without getting obsessed … right? We’ll see how it goes.

💐 Blog Plans For May 2022

The goal for the next 6 months is to bet on myself. This means I’m not going to hide behind being busy with client work. I’m going to use my time and resources wisely to get my site back up to speed while simultaneously building an audience and community to go with it. This means a lot more publishing and trying new strategies.
