💭What Happened In July 2023

Robotic Work Mode

July was quite possibly the busiest month we’ve had in a very long time. It was filled with 3 fun trips, lots of activities and a family visitor for two weeks. I love that I can still make money while keeping a pulse on the blog but it does have its drawbacks!

This month I kept up with my posts but I felt like I wasn’t present in the process. My main focus was to get my client work done and then move onto TJ so my energy was scarce for it. Although I did keep up my posting schedule somewhat, I don’t feel connected to the work I was doing and I don’t enjoy that feeling.

Increased Traffic

Even though the algorithm shows a huge loss in keywords this month, my traffic remained elevated. I hit over 240k pageviews in JULY. I remember back when I first started blogging always dreading this month as this was the slump month when everyone is busy. Luckily I had compounding time on my side as well as blog posts that I specifically made for the summer months doing well. In 2018 I made just over $200 in July so to see that number increase to over $7000 is still mind blowing to me.

Getting With The Times

I follow a lot of non-food bloggers who make a lot of money having lots of sites with just “ok” content. While that’s not what I am aiming to do here, I do learn a lot from them. What I’m seeing is that a lot of them don’t have a ton of authority in their niches and so all of these changes abound are making them lose traffic. It makes me think about my long term strategy. Sure, I could just keep putting out posts forever and have that be the only thing I do, but over time I would eventually not learn new things and my income would start to dwindle. I would love blogging as a whole to take me to retirement and so I need to make some changes in what I’m doing.

  • Back end stuff: The first thing I need to do is create a better system for the back end of my business. This means hiring a CPA and really get my books in line so I can grow without worry.
  • Video taking over: I also need to work on getting back out there on social media. I watched a youtuber say that she gets her dinner ideas from the search box on Tiktok which blew my mind. While food blogging will always be there, connecting the blog WITH video content will be even more helpful as search engines start to show more and more video results further up the page. I really enjoy creating for social media platforms. When I did, I felt connected and I felt like I was actually helping people and forming a community. But with some health issues, becoming a new mom (at the time) I let the mental side get the best of me. I keep threatening to “come back” but I really think its time.
  • Email list: I’ve put this off for SO DAMN LONG. I haven’t sent a newsletter in YEARS. I’ve been collecting emails since but have been doing nothing with them. The whole process seems overwhelming, or at least it did at the time. These days there are so many programs that make this easier and so I plan to switch to one of them and start sending emails at some point.
  • Pinterest: While my Pinterest traffic has had a slight bump, its not groundbreaking traffic anymore but I really feel like it could be! My only issue with Pinterest at this point is actually making the pins. It’s something I’d love to outsource but haven’t had the gumption to get off the ground.
  • Hiring a writer again: This sounds crazy, but I would like to hire a writer for MY blogs. Yes, I write for other peoples blogs but I spend all my good energy on their stuff and have little left for my own. I’m an obliger in a sense that I need pressure and accountability and I get that with client work but not so much my own stuff. I could grow a lot faster with all of these things if I hired some help. If anyone reading this is interested or knows anyone. Contact me!

August Plans

Needless to say, this is all overwhelming to me, especially coming off of a month of reduced blog output. But deep down I KNOW I’m ready to not only share more but I’m ready to share better, I’m just really bad at taking the first step.

As far as the actual blogging goes. My plan is to post 3x a week on TJ with one major post update. In August I will be focusing on creating and fine tuning holiday content. I know its a little late in the game for that but I have some posts that I feel could easily get traffic quickly. My other site I would love to be posting 2x per week on, but I’m having trouble writing for it because I’m burnt out by the time I get to it, hence needing another writer.

I would also love to “get back” on social media, but I have too many accounts for different niches and I don’t know how to streamline it all in one place. I think I have an idea for how I’d like to combine things so hopefully it goes well!
