💭What Happened In November 2022

Highest Month Ever

In 2019 I made $5000 in the month of November. I was ECSTATIC! I even announced in my income report that month that I was going to go full time with the blog and not continue with my personal chef services. Just 3 years later I have tripled that amount and I’m so happy that I stuck through with it.

November is an interesting month for me as I have one post that does really well. This year it did well but I also had much more content to not only back up that specific post, but also the many posts I’ve been writing throughout the year.

I truly have no idea what the future will bring but I am glad to have made yet another 5 figure month!

November Traffic & RPM’s

  • 2020 – 370,000
  • 2021 – 261,000
  • 2022 – 491,0803

This month also officially marks another record break in traffic. I had nearly 500,000 pageviews which is something I have not seen before. I also find it crazy that 2021 had LESS traffic than the year before but we all know what happened there. Either way, this shows that compounded growth is possible with consistent strategy.

One thing that made 2021 great was the very high RPM’s. Even though I never have an RPM that is too high for the month because of the type of content, there definitely was an overall decrease from last year. The economic downturn in the world has all to do with this and its one of those things we can’t control. The only lever I had to pull was to get more posts up to gain more traffic, and that’s what I did.

I will also say that a significant portion of my traffic came from Pinterest. This honestly scares me because most of the traffic came from pins that are mostly 3 years old at this point. The fear comes from the fact that I just don’t know how long that will last, but again, not something I can control!

I still am actively posting on Pinterest but my strategy admittedly is not great. I do plan to have my VA help me increase the quality of the pins to see if that helps with anything. I’m not giving up until that river runs dry.

750 Post Publishing Sprint

At the time of writing this report, I have *almost* completed my goal. All that needs to be done is scheduling. I wrote a lot about the feeling and emotion behind this goal.

Now that it’s here, I don’t really feel . . . anything? I’m happy that I have proved that I can post every day. My hope was two things, one that it would explode my traffic, and two that I would get into a rhythm where posting most days would feel easy because the systems were in place.

Obviously my traffic hasn’t exploded with the exception of this month. In fact, now that the dust has cleared from the holidays, I can see that I did get hit with the latest update.

The good thing is that I really have been able to keep a consistent pace with posting and now it can be just a part of my week while I begin to layer in other strategies.

Blogging Is Changing

The last update looks like it hit me but upon closer examination, I’m not so sure. I am steadily declining on rankings in some aspects but most of the decline is from terms I should have never been ranking for. My guess is that the helpful content up date took me off the list ranking for things that I wasn’t even getting traffic for. Lets hope this is the case.

It’s no secret that blogging is continuing to go through a huge evolution. After 2020 there have seemed to be changes and updates that haven’t really stopped. It is MUCH harder to rank and make money for most people starting blogs or continuing blogs.

This new wave of changes seems to be 2 forces. One, google is trying out many forms of how information is displayed. Its no longer “pick what you like” its more like, here’s the answer, then some videos’ and other stuff, then the content from others. Because of this, authority and established domains seem to matter.

Two is AI content. The AI software out there has grown leaps and bounds since its origination. This makes it easier for people to pump out content for nearly zero dollars which means there is going to be an even more saturated market. And lets not even talk about what may or may not happen with third party cookies!

So how do WE evolve as bloggers? Obviously diversifying is on everyone’s mind. The sole method of earning through display ads has become risky as more people turn to short form video or Youtube. In short, more of a connection to the readers can be forged to create other income streams.

Another strategy could be having more sites that make varying amounts of money to pad your income.

I think the answer lies somewhere in the middle. There are many experts out there strategizing about what the next best thing is to do and honestly, its confusing! People are also putting timelines as to when blogging is going to die for the average small publisher, and that doesn’t feel good either.

As for me, I really do think its smart to think about diversifying but I’m not sure how to do that in a way that won’t steamroll my mental sanity. I do also have ideas for another site and there is the two sites that Kristina and I both are trying to grow so our basket isn’t empty thankfully.

If you’re hearing too much noise and doom and gloom about the future of blogging, I encourage you to step away from what others are saying for a bit. Right now continuing to do what I’m doing consistently is what I will do until I feel like there is another right move!

🎄 Blog Plans For December 2022

Thanks to the systems I have in place, I am already scheduled through most of December! Since I have met my 750 goal, I now am only going to post 5 times a week if I can manage it. This month I am hanging in with the process as it is and enjoying the holidays. In January I hope to use some of my work week to start thinking about how to diversify and maybe even starting yet another site!
